Balts to celebrate Ligo
festival in Beijing
At the invitation of the Latvian Embassy in China, all three Baltic
state embassies in Beijing will join with Baltic citizens resident in
Beijing in celebrating the forthcoming Ligo (summer solstice)
festival together on 23 June.
It is proposed that representatives from each country will introduce
the others to its traditions, songs and beliefs in celebrating the Ligo
festival. The celebrations will feature greenery, bonfires, Jani
(Festival of St John, celebrated on 24 June) cheese, a symbolic search
for the fern blossom (a fertility ritual), and locally brewed Chinese
beer.
This is the first time such a joint event has been held between the
representatives of Latvia,
Lithuania and Estonia
in the Chinese capital. As there are relatively few people from the
Baltic states living in Beijing,
it is expected that the event will be attended by around 25 Balts,
together with a further 15 guests and representatives from the media.
